An equestrian sporting discipline in which teams of riders competing against each other aim to drive a small ball into the opponents goal using long wooden mallets. Conventional polo is played on a large field or pitch with four players per side, arena polo is played in a smaller (occasionally indoor) arena with three players per side.

Translations :

Français
  • polo, m

Polymerplastics that can be injection molded into any required shape. They are also available as liquid two component composites for use on site (for instance hoof wall repair). Depending on their exact chemical composition they can vary greatly in terms of hardness and elasticity. They all have adhesive qualities.

Translations :

Mountain and Moorland breeds

Pony breeds that are native to the British Isles including the Dartmoor, Exmoor, New Forest, Welsh, Fell, Dales, Highland, Shetland and Connemara.

They were originally bred as working ponies adapted to a harsh climate and poor quality grazing. These days they are mainly used as childrens riding ponies and are often maintained on grazing and diets that are far too nutritious for their needs (sugars and proteins). This makes these breeds of pony particularly prone to laminitis.

Certain breeds still have a feral population (e.g. Dartmoor and Exmoor, New Forest)

Force per surface area. The SI-unit of pressure is Pascal (Pa; N/m2 = km·m-1·s-2).

Pressure as a unit is used in biomechanical research and in evaluation of saddle fit using pressure mats.

decubitus ulcer

Lesions of the skin caused by constant pressure. Unrelieved pressure over a long period of time leads to a loss of bloodcirculation to the skin, which then leads to damage and death of the surrounding tissue. The sores vary in size and depth depending on the extent and the duration of the pressure. Pressure sores are frequently encountered in horses if insufficient padding material is used when applying a bandage or cast over a bony prominence such as the accessory carpal bone. Another cause of pressure sores is prolonged periods of recumbancy (e.g. in sick foals).

Translations :

Français
  • escarre, f
