A flexion test of the forelimb
A tendon which connects a muscle involved in the flexion of a limb to a bone. Horses have two very strong flexor tendons which flex the digit; the superficial and deep flexor tendons.

A condition where a foal is born with flexor tendons that are too long or loose relative to the bones of the limbs, leading to a hyperextension of the fetlock and phalangeal joints. The toe of the hoof is typically raised from the ground the heels or bulbs are used for weight bearing. In extreme cases, the fetlock may touch the ground.

Flexor tendon laxity in the hind limb of a Shetland pony foal
A flexural deformity is a stance or limb deviation that is visible from the side. It is caused by an incongruity between the length of a bone (in the limbs) and a tendon. If the tendon is relatively too long one speaks of a tendon laxity or a tendon hypoflexion: the most frequent example of this is the laxitiy of the digital flexor tendons in foals leading to hyperextension of the phalangeal joints and a 'toe-up' conformation. Relatively too short tendons also known as contracted tendons are also most commonly seen in the digital flexor tendons: a club foot is the result of a deep digital flexor tendon contracture, an extremely upright pastern (knuckling forwards at the fetlock) is the result of a superficial digital flexor tendon contracture.

Deformation of the heels where the horn tubules no longer grow straight down form coronary band to bearing edge, but curve inwards or fowards towards the sole and frog. The pressure of the inwards growing wall on the sole can lead to an inflammation of the dermis in the angle of the sole (corns). Furthermore the heels can lo longer effectively support the weight of the horse and will eventually collapse entirely (collapsed/under-run heels).

hoof stand
A shoeing aid consisting of a tripod or weighted circular base attached to a hoof rest. The solar surface of the hoof is rested on the stand, enabling procedures such as dressing of the wall or clenching to be carried out without having to hold the hoof.
