Premier filetage normé au monde. Son inventeur, Sir Joseph Whitworth, l'a conçu en 1841.
Dans les filetages Whitworth (ou BSW pour British Standard Whitworth) l'angle du filet fait 55° et les pas sont donnés en nombre de filet par pouce et non en millimètres comme dans le filetage métrique SI (système international). Le filet BSW est relativement gros et résistant.

Erstes genormtes Gewinde der Welt. Nach Sir Joseph Whitworth benannt, der es 1841 einführte. Whitworth-Gewinde haben Zoll-Abmessungen und 55° Flankenwinkel.
Die Steigung wird als Anzahl der Windungen je Zoll Gewindelänge angegeben, im Gegensatz zur Steigung je Umdrehung bei metrischen Gewinden.
