A
A chemical substance that is used locally that can kill or reduce growth of microorgansims on living tissue or on surfaces. It can reduce the risk of infection. In contrast to antibiotics they cannot be given systemically.

This condition is also called bloodpoisoning. It is a dangerous condition where bacteria causing an infection in a part of the body (a wound, or an organ, e.g. pneumonia) enter the blood stream, along with the toxins they produce. This can lead to a spread of the infection to other organs and tissues, potentially the whole body (a disease that is known as sepsis). Septicaemia (and sepsis) can be fatal and requires immediate veterinary treatment. Affected horses are very poorly, common symptoms include fever, high heart and respiratory rate, inability to stand, anorexia. It is more common in foals than in adult horses.

aseptic pododermatitis
Bruising of the soft tissue (corium) underneath the horn of the sole, most commonly found in the angle of the sole. The bruising leads to a reddish discolouration of the horn which when pared away may be dry (dry corn) or reveal an accumulation of serum underneath the horn (moist corn). Corns may be caused by shoes which have been left on for too long resulting in the heels and walls growing over the outer edge, forcing the heels of the shoe onto the softer horn in the angle of the sole.
