plaster cast
The original casting material known as plaster of paris is made of a calcium sulphate encrusted loose weave bandage. Upon addition of water, the calcium sulphate turns into a thick semi-solid mouldable mass which rapidly hardens into a solid mass under emission of heat.
(Plaster) casting is used as a treatment of various disorders of the hoof that require thorough immobilisation.
These days, modern materials such as scotchcast® bandages are rapidly replacing the plaster casts.

Sulfate de calcium qui, mélangé à environ 50% d'eau (gâchage), forme une pâte se solidifiant rapidemment après refroidissement. Le plâtre est aujourd'hui encore utilisé pour soigner diverses maladies de la région du sabot. Cependant on utilise généralement des matériaux plus modernes mais plus onéreux, par exemple la résine «Scotchcast».

Kalziumsulfat; bildet nach Zusatz von ca. 50 Vol.% Wasser einen Brei, der unter Wärmeabgabe rasch zu einer festen Masse erstarrt.
Verbandsmaterial aus Gips wird heute noch bei verschiedenen Erkrankungen im Hufbereich verwendet. Meist finden jedoch modernere Materialien wie «Scotchcast®» Verwendung, welche deutlich teurer sind.
