terminal horn
Definition
Tubular horn that is produced by the terminal papillae of the dermal lamellae of the inner hoof wall (stratum internum or stratum lamellatum). Terminal horn fills the 'gaps' between the horny lamellae between the end of the dermal lamellae and the solar surface of the hoof and, therefore, forms a part of the white line. The striations visible in the white line are caused by alternating leaflets of lamellar horn and terminal horn.

Als Terminalhorn wird das von den Terminalzotten produzierte Röhrchenhorn bezeichnet, das im Bereich der weissen Linie die Zwischenräume zwischen den Hornblättchen ausfüllt. Sein Anteil an der weissen Linie wird auf 80% geschätzt. Ist dieses Terminalhorn von ungenügender Qualität, zerfällt es rasch und führt zum Problem der «White Line Disease».
Häufig wir der Begriff Füllhorn synonym zu Terminal- resp. Terminallagenhorn verwendet; strikte genommen sollte der Begriff «Füllhorn» nur gebraucht werden wenn das Terminalhorn und das (beim Pferd wenige) Kappenhorn zusammen gemeint sind.
