Definition
A chemical compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3. Ammonia is a colourless gas with a characteristic pungent smell. It is generated through the decay of nitrogen containing biological waste such as urine and is therefore present in significant quantities in unhygienic stabling in which soiled bedding is not regularly removed. Due to its caustic nature, it can cause serious irritation of the respiratory system if it is inhaled, as well as facilitating the development of diseases of the hoof such as thrush or white line disease if the horse continually stands on wet bedding.

L'ammoniac est un composé chimique formé par un atome d'azote et trois atomes d'hydrogène (NH3). Ce gaz ammoniac est incolore, irritant et a une odeur caractéristique assez désagréable. Dans les écuries, l'ammoniac est un gaz toxique; il résulte de la décomposition chimique de l'urine et des fèces. L'ammoniac est soluble dans l'eau et se transforme alors en ammoniaque, responsable de l'attaque caustique de la peau et des muqueuses.

Es gehört zu den Schadgasen im Pferdestall und entsteht bei der Zersetzung von Harn und Kot. Ammoniak wirkt reizend auf Schleimhäute und ist ein wichtiger Faktor bei der Entstehung von Atemwegserkrankungen.
In der mit Urin und Kot durchfeuchteten Einstreu wirkt Ammoniak als Lauge und greift durch seine Reizwirkung das Horn der Hufe an, wodurch die Entstehung von Strahlfäule und Huferkrankungen wie White Line Disease begünstigt wird.
