horn tubule

Definition

A type of cylindrical horn structure found in the horn of the hoof. It represents the horn that is grown from the epidermis of the papillae on the corium of the hoof wall and the sole. Microscopically a small medullary cavity is visible in the centre of the tubule - this is caused by the lack of germinative cells at the very tip of the papilla.

Petite unité de structure cylindrique de la paroi du sabot. Elle est produite dans la couche germinative de l'épiderme au niveau des papilles du bourrelet. Son orientation dépend de celle de la papille. Tout comme pour les poils, on peut distinguer histologiquement sur un tubule la medulla du cortex.

Il existe plusieurs sortes de tubules: par exemple, les tubules des couches basales sont plus flexibles que ceux des couches superficielles.
