fistula

Definition

An abnormal connection or passageway between two epithelium lined structures or between an internal structure and the surface of the skin. A fistula  is usually a disease process, but can be surgically created to promote healing of or circumvent an internal organ. Possible causes of a natural fistula include the presence of a foreign body or necrotic tissue which the body is attempting to remove (e.g. quittor or a bone sequestrum).
